Mathematics

The mathematics courses are founded on the premise that students learn mathematics most effectively when they build a thorough understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures. Such understanding is achieved when mathematical concepts and procedures are introduced through an investigative approach and connected to students’ prior knowledge in meaningful ways. This curriculum is designed to help students prepare for university, college, or the workplace by building a solid conceptual foundation in mathematics that will enable them to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways and further their learning successfully.

Business Studies

The design of the business studies program will enable students to select courses that relate to their interests and that prepare them for further study or work in the field of their choosing. Business studies courses are well suited for inclusion in programs that lead to a diploma with a Specialist High-Skills Major. Whether students eventually work in business or simply use the services of business, the business studies program will provide them with a foundation for making wise choices and informed decisions.

Social Sciences and Humanities

The secondary social sciences and humanities program are concerned with how students view themselves, their families, their communities, and the broader society, and how they come to understand and respond to the world around them. Through practical experience, discussion, debate, research, reflection, and the development of critical and creative thinking skills, social sciences and humanities courses help students become self-motivated problem solvers equipped with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to face their changing world with confidence.

The Arts

Secondary school Arts courses are designed to appeal to students’ interests and imagination, and provide a basis for more intensive and specialized study. In all arts subjects, emphasis is placed on acquiring more advanced skills and applying them in more complex ways. An important aim in these courses is to help students understand the world in which they live and to help them make choices that will both enrich their lives and prepare them for a variety of careers. To this end, course content is designed to encourage students to understand the connections between what they are doing in class and what is required in a broad range of university and college programs and the world of work.

English as a Second Language

ESL courses are designed for English language learners who have had opportunities to develop language and literacy skills in their own language appropriate to their age or grade level. Most English language learners are in this group. These learners may be entering secondary school from elementary school alongside their English-speaking peers, or they may be entering secondary school in Ontario having recently arrived from other countries. They can read and write in their own language within the expected range for students of their age in their own country. They can build on their existing first-language skills when learning English in an ESL program.
